Ways to Say Thank You This Holiday Season

The holidays have finally arrived and families across North Carolina have already started decorating for the season, testing new recipes, and searching for the best Black Friday deals. However, if this year has taught us anything, it’s that now more than ever we should all be searching for ways to give back, donate what we can — even if it’s just our time — and support those in need.

Although COVID-19 has forced smaller gatherings, there are still endless ways you can lend a helping hand this winter. Take a look at some of these generous opportunities located right near your Capitol City Homes community! We have also compiled a list of ways you can help from the comfort of your new home if you are unable to attend in-person.

Fayetteville Area

  • Holiday Honor Cards through Fayetteville Urban Ministry: support your community this holiday season by purchasing a card designed by artist William Mangum. All proceeds go directly towards the ministry’s local initiatives of providing education, assistance, and basic necessities to those in need. You can purchase your holiday honor card here.
  • From now until Monday, November 30th, help United Way check off their reverse advent calendar to help collect food, cleaning items, paper products, diapers, etc. for those in need. You can find the calendar, here, as well as a full list of events by United Way, here.
  • Consider donating blood to help directly save a life! Cape Fear Valley Health has its own blood donor center with frequent blood drives in the Fayetteville, NC area. You can check out a full list of their upcoming events here.

Mebane Area

  • Are you an animal lover? Get involved with your local adoption agency! Paws4Ever is dedicated to connecting adoptable animals with their forever (or should we say furever) home. • Connect with DreamAlign Ministries to help your fellow Mebane, NC community members who are in need — this holiday season and all throughout the year. This non-profit provides individuals with a Food Pantry, Clothing Closet, Job Resources, and Little Luxuries — a program dedicated to seniors. Check out some of their continued work on their Facebook page and learn about how you can help here.
  • Mebane, NC is home to The North Carolina Therapeutic Riding Center — an organization dedicated to helping “empower children and adults with physical, mental, emotional and social challenges...” Show your support for this non-profit by making a monetary donation or purchasing an item from their wish list here.

New Bern Area

  • From now until December 31st, support The Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina at various grocery stores around your New Bern home, including Food Lion, Lowes Foods, and Harris Teeter. Look out for donation bins where you can leave non-perishable food items or make a cash donation at the register!
  • Need an easy way to help those in the New Bern community from home? Help the Interfaith Refugee Ministry by purchasing an item from their AmazonSmile wish list! This incredible non-profit helps refugees rebuild in eastern NC — providing basic necessities such as food, clothing, and household items.
  • Looking for a way to help the environment this year? Partner with Sound Rivers and help keep the Neuse and Tar-Pamlico River Basins protected and clean. Become a member, make a donation or volunteer at the New Bern office. Take action here.

Pittsboro Area

  • Help end hunger in your Pittsboro Community through CORA Food Pantry! In the past year, this organization has served over 15,000 individuals. This year, they will be holding a pantry on December 5th where individuals can go and receive pre-packed bags of shelf-stable food and other necessities. Donate food before the 5th to help! CORA is open for donation drop-off Monday - Friday from 9 am to 4 pm. You can find a list of their most requested items here.

  • When the pandemic hit, the team at Overflowing Hands — an organization aimed at providing resources for children in need — partnered with local catering company, Rocky Top Catering, to help distribute meals to families in Wake County that needed help feeding their children during this national crisis. Sign up to help distribute meals or donate to this cause making a direct impact in the Raleigh community.
  • Although they have currently suspended volunteers on-site, the Raleigh Rescue Mission has plenty of volunteer opportunities and other ways to get involved from home. Capitol City Cares

At Capitol City Homes, we’re dedicated to helping those in need all year long. This is why we partner with several charities and organizations including the Wake County YMCA, The American Red Cross, The Humane Society, The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, and Swing for the Kids. These are all organizations we know and love, so if you’re unsure where to donate this season, these are some fantastic options!

However, in addition to supporting these incredible local non-profits, we have also started our own annual golf tournament to raise money for a local child diagnosed with a life-threatening disease. Learn more about Capitol City Cares and our 2020 recipient here.

There are also plenty of year-round volunteer opportunities that you can take part in near your Capitol City Homes community. From bringing outgrown clothes to GoodWill Community Foundation, donating furniture to the Salvation Army, setting up a recurring monthly donation to the non-profit of your choice, or shopping locally as often as possible.
