The kitchen is no longer just a room where food is prepared and cooked. Over the past decade, it has become one of the trendiest spots in your home! We recruited the experts at Builder and Houzz to predict the top kitchen trends of 2019. Whether you’re renovating your existing kitchen or building a new home with Capitol City Homes, we’re here to help refresh and rethink your cooking space.
For most, the kitchen is the heart of the home—a place where families and friends gather to welcome the morning or wind-down at night. We spend a lot of time in our kitchens, so keeping them functional and stylish will keep your inner-chef feeling “trendy!”
Cabinets & Countertops
If you’re going to splurge on your kitchen, take a look at your cabinets. 78% of homeowners who renovated their kitchen upgraded their kitchen cabinets and chose custom or semi-custom cabinets, with the Shaker-style being the most popular.
White cabinets and granite countertops are still at the top of renovation choices, but homebuyers are starting to break away from neutrals. Bold colors in the kitchen are popping up on everything from kitchen cabinets and islands to appliances and pantries. “Moodier” cabinet tones in blues and greys are trends we’re seeing, but if you love the fresh, clean, white kitchen but want to try something slightly different, try combining white and dark wood cabinets. A softer white island with colored cabinets, for example, is a solid choice.
Kitchen countertops are the most-upgraded kitchen feature, according to the Houzz study. Granite countertops have been the go-to for years—it’s easy to care for, heat-resistant, comes in a variety of colors and can be cut into numerous edge choices (bullnose, square, etc.). But marble and quartz are sneaking up on the “must have” feature list and giving granite a run for its money!
Lighting, Backsplash & Mixing Materials
Lighting dictates design. It sets a mood and helps style a space. The kitchen is a workspace and task lighting have an important place there, so why not make a statement with pendant lights over your kitchen island? Pendant lighting is a simple and tasteful way to upgrade your kitchen. A combination of island lighting includes single pendants, which you can group together, or multi-lights for style and function.
A thoughtfully-designed backsplash creates great architectural detail. Subway tile has been a hot trend but mix it up with larger details or color (blue is a very popular color). Geometric patterns, ribbed design, mosaics, glass or stone are all possible ideas to create your kitchen artwork. Research also suggests that by taking the design all the way up the wall, you can create an unforgettable focal feature.
Mixed materials, especially metals, are a trend that has some people feeling unsure—fear not! It’s a big trend in 2019 and gives you more option for overall design. If you’re asking yourself, bronze, brass, nickel, or chrome—don't choose just one. Throw the matchy-matchy policy out the window! Let your kitchen’s personality shine through with a mix of metals for hardware and fixtures. Tip: Add wood elements to bring warmth and nature inside (like over the exhaust vent over your oven).
